"Is It Time To Get Serious About Your Writing?"

For most writers who have come to terms with their passion and desire to spend their time creatively expressing themselves through the written word either by writing a book, writing courses or training materials, freelance writing or even blog writing, there is often a turning point where you set a goal to get serious about your writing.

To most, that means getting paid for your writing, and to many, getting serious means making a living with their writing instead of having to always relegate your creative energy to the back seat behind jobs and activities required to pay the bills.

Depending on where you are with your writing dreams and goals, getting paid for your writing may mean different things.

For instance, someone in the early stages of trying to learn the craft of writing a book may look to freelance writing jobs as a method of honing their craft, getting paid for researching their market all while building a name for themselves in their chosen specialty market.

Alternatively, freelance writers may look toward authoring their own published or self-published book as a method of escaping (or at least augmenting) their current reliance on project-based, freelance writing work.

Indeed, many serious freelance writers who have successfully specialzized on a given niche market reach a point where they can leverage their expertise, move beyond the confining walls of mainstream publishing to position themselves within their market by writing a book of their own.

An example, in the blog posting "Information Publisher - Going Against Your Target Market" we profiled a seasoned freelance writer with a focus on travel who outgrew the confines of freelance writing choosing to take on the very market he once was part of with a completely contrarian view of the market.

No matter how artistic, altruistic and creative you are, the time will come, if it hasn't already for you, where you realize that making a living with your writing - even making a very lucrative living - will help you direct your energies in the optimum direction.

Anyone reading this who has tried to write a book in the wee hours of the morning before the kids get up, before your work day saps your energy and before the rigours of life infringe on your private time understands that the odds are against you fully enjoying your goal writing goals.

So, what can you do this year to get serious about your writing?

1. Seek To Become The Expert. Plain and simple, those perceived as experts in their field are paid much more than anyone else. It always amazes me when I speak with freelance writers and they have been writing on a topic or two for years, have amassed incredible knowledge in their chosen fields, study the market inside and out but completely miss the fact that they could be branding themselves as a self-made expert rather than working piecemeal for magazines, newspapers or as ghostwriters.

If you are already a freelance writer with some experience and passion for a given market, then getting serious about your writing simply means organizing the knowledge you already have into your own book, e-book or informational product.

Maybe you are just starting to write, have an interest in a certain market or already have knowledge but haven't decided on a writing direction yet? Do yourself a huge favor, seek out a unique position in your marketplace and brand yourself as THE expert. This time next year, you will see the fruits of embracing such a strategy.

2. Understand the power of leverage. As a freelance writer, you trade your time for money, at the end of the project, you no longer get paid and have to chase the next one. What happens if you want to take a holiday, need to tend to someone in your family or have your own personal or health problems - your source of income dries up doesn't it? What about your earning potential. Even as you become a better freelance writer, will you ever create enough wealth to focus on projects you really want to focus on - say take a year off to work on a book?

On the other hand, when you write a booklet, write a book, package your research and knowledge into a membership site or otherwise monetize your content you can continually earn profit from that material month after month, year after year, passively.

Targeting the proper challenges within your marketplace, you could be living on passive income from a book, a few reports and a private members site within 12-months of reading this information. In fact, depending on where you are starting from, it could be much sooner than that.

3. Think non-fiction - even if you aspire to write fiction. Making a living writing fiction is extremely difficult and not realistic for most people. However non-fiction topics offer much more potential in terms of monetary return. Whether you opt for traditional publishing or take advantage of the options for self-publishing, choose to specialize on a non-fiction market as your bread-and-butter. As you turn writing into a lucrative living, you can then focus more of your creative energies on fiction if that is your ultimate desire.

Whether yours is a passionate interest in the creative side of writing, a goal to see your name in print, a dream about living the "writer's life" or to earn massive wealth it all starts with getting serious about your writing.

Above all else, consciously choose to elevate your self-confidence in your research and writing skills to a point where you realize that YOU deserve to be the expert in your marketplace, and get paid appropriately, not just once, but over and over again through writing a book, e-book, report or other non-fiction information-based product this year.
