I still get emotional remembering our first ebook launch back in 2000, a 60-page PDF ebook about innovation and creativity that went on to sell more than $30,000 that first year – and still sells in its 4th edition today!

Since then, we have gone on to publish dozens of other ebooks, training manuals, and membership sites – otherwise known as information products.

So naturally, over that time I have been asked a GAZILLION times by others “Can I write an ebook that sells?”

Short answer…anyone CAN write an ebook that not only launches a secondary profit center for the author, but also brands he or she as an expert and opens up an entirely new world of career and business options.

Just because you can though doesn’t mean you will.

In fact, less than 1 in 100 who want to write an ebook will actually carry through on that dream or desire.

Why?

Many reasons including:

  • Not knowing how to start
  • Not having the time
  • Not believing in their idea
  • Lack of support
  • Lack of confidence
  • Lack of persistence through temporary setbacks along the way
  • Procrastination

While there is no “one size fits all” advice when it comes to helping you realize your goal of writing your ebook (that’s why we operate Information Marketer’s Zone with an aim to simplifying the process, providing our tools and techniques to you and provide personal coaching guaranteeing your success if you put in the effort) – there is one word of advice that will help just about anyone struggling with the reasons above…

Match topics you are passionate about with commercial desire.

What I mean here is that too many people jump into markets that they are neither passionate about or care to learn about just because they appear to be commercially viable.

When that happens, you inevitably fail when it comes to sticking with your topic, connecting with your audience and building a solid, highly profitable back-end that serves the top-end of your market.

Ebooks are often step1 of a multi-tier information delivery business.

Think about Tony Robbins who sold tons of Unlimited Power books, but the real profit comes from seminars, audio packages, DVD’s, Coaching, etc…

Ebooks do produce profits, but those profits pale in comparison to what is possible if you serve your market at a deeper level…if you choose a market that does not interest you, chances are you will not go the extra mile to gain the 90% of the profit you will leave sitting on the table.

On the other hand, if you select a market that you are passionate about but DO NOT put in the day or two worth of market research to “tune” that niche market toward the largest niche demand you will be have written an ebook that will under-perform in terms of sales.

For example, you may have an idea for a specific exercise or diet plan that you feel will help people lose weight, but without knowledge of how people go about seeking out information, you will miss the mark in terms of reaching your audience.

We go through all of this (mistakes and shortcuts) inside InfoMarketer’sZone .
