Am I really doing it all wrong? 

Could this be true – it seems that there are many people who know better than I how to instantly start cashing $90,000 checks each month, maybe I better have my head examined – or perhaps I just have lost touch with how much of an opportunity the internet has really become?

Or maybe – I'm up to my eyeballs in bullshit so deep that I can't continue ignoring it!

Hmmm…yes, it is the latter.  In fact, I'm not as affected by such hype as someone who is struggling with a minimum wage job – or even worse – has been "displaced" in the current worldwide job crunch – what must this crap look like to them? 

Look, I've built offline and online businesses over the last 15-years – there is NO model where you can immediately (or even in the very short-term) consistently make $90K/month – get over it!

REALISTIC INCOME GOALS FOR AN INTERNET BUSINESS

Let me begin by saying that there is no one-size-fits-all growth path for businesses – I've seen some grow very quickly while others take years to grow, and of course, many NEVER grow. 

Starting with a plan for $3-$5K/month is certainly a realistic point for someone just starting out, where there will be a learning curve and where there is some product development or supporting material (to launch a service) involved.

Further – allowing yourself a 3-month buffer to get things rolling is realistics too – it's not like you begin making $3K/month on day 3 or 4.

There certainly are ways to accelerate revenue – ex. create products quickly that you can start selling within 1-2 weeks – but that still involves putting up a compelling website and generating traffic.

To me, the guarantee of $90K/month or whatever crazy claims are made has never been as important as interim targets that allow you to

1) Pay off some debts – take some of the heat off of your current living situation and give yourself some breathing room

2) Replace your employment income inside of 12-months (some will do it within 6-months, but 12 is a realistic objective)

3) Build a foundation where growth will continue so that you can leverage your what you have done in the beginning.  In other words, don't go after the quick buck using a system that is unsustainable – just ask the Adsense arbitrage people about this one – gaming the search engines falls into this category.  I would argue building a business based entirely on selling someone else's products is unsustainable too…but that's another blog post.

4) That you build in more and more leverage into your model as you grow so that you can scale to much bigger income over time without YOU being the obstacle to growth.   This means setting up repetitive processes, outsource agreeements that make business sense, creating products that continue to pay you long after you have stopped putting effort into developing them.  This is the basis of the Information Product Publishing Model we teach in the Ultimate Information Marketer's Success System. 

These are not only realistic internet business income goals, they are based on building a sound online business where you control your products, you build leverage into your business and continue to build growing profits as well as increasing equity so that you really can benefit from your work in the future.   

Find the best plan that works for you, put your head down, keep moving in a forward direction, quickly learn from setbacks and mistakes – readjust and you will get there.

You know that you need a website of some kind, maybe a blog, and you may even have a few ideas about what you would like to offer to your marketplace – but when it comes to what do I do FIRST, the process can seem overwhelming.

Assuming you have some ideas on what markets you MAY want to tackle, what are the first two things you need to do right away?

 The key now is to

1) Get started communicating with your market and

2) Research the marketplace and see what types and topics of information products (books, ebooks, courses, seminars, etc…) are already selling in this area so that you can use proven buying activity to help direct and refine your decision of what products you could charge for. 

I would take these first steps…

1. Spend a day or two looking at Amazon.com and uncover books that fit some of the topics you have in mind – in this case, finding competition is a GOOD thing – it mean there is more opportunity to sell things into that market.  When you click on any book within Amazon and scroll down the screen you will see a "Sales Rank" that gives you an idea of how well that book is selling.  Lowest rank means the best sellers – so finding books below a rank of 100,000 or so means that it is selling.  Why is that important?  Just as we often by several books on topics we are interested in…so to do others which means that if we find a topic that is already selling well, chances are we can make a similar book on that topic of our own and sell it well too. 

Visit Clicbank Marketplace and search under the different categories to see if there are ebooks that are selling well (same idea as with Amazon)

The purpose with all of this is to find some topics that you know are selling online that can help guide your choice of either products you want to resell (and make 40-60% commissions through an affiliate program) or products that you want to have created for you. 

2. Setup your own website and blog.  This all starts with

a) Having an idea of what your blog will be called
b) Signing up with a webhost where you can put up your first website – many have simple blog installs included these days. 

My choice is this affordable webhost - they are a top notch webhost, easy to use, have great support and have a 2-3 step Wordpress install that can help you get a blog setup within about 30-minutes.

Once you have your blog setup, then you can begin posting daily on topics of interest to you – that will generate traffic to your site and begin to build a following that you can turn into buying customers as you find/create products to sell online.

These simple 2-steps will go a long way to getting you started in the right direction.

What should you do next if you choose one of these topics?

Assess the level of competition, find evidence of other related info products, outline your product, quickly put together a short ebook and launch your product.

There are two very common numbers online marketing professionals have when they start out…$5K or $15K/month

I suppose the $5K is the bare minimum most of us start out believing is necessary to replace our current income or at least, pay the bills allowing us to spend more time operating our business.  A proof that this internet business dream really does have legs and may just work after all.

The desire to reach $15K/month is a bigger goal – one that many of us see as reaching a comfort zone of between $150K-$200K/year allowing us to not only pay the bills, but to buy the extra's, take a vacation whenever we want and put a down-payment on a dream car or dream house. 

In summary, $15k would prove that you can move beyond "getting by" to achieving wealth creation – a stepping stone to really scaling your internet business and income turning it into something very special.

What's most interesting to me is that there is really very little difference between earning $5K online and earning $15K online…

The only difference really is a matter of scale and time. 

If you have found a formula that works to bring in $5K/month then you have the ability to scale that to $15K/month and beyond by simply getting more money from your existing customers and expanding the model you are using to reach new customers. 

TOWARD $15k/MONTH WITH INFO PRODUCTS

Best way is to start making money online is with info  products that are high in popularity.  Where do you find these hidden gems?

You can find them by searching the 30,000+ products on Clickbank Marketplace or by finding hot topics within Amazon.

Clickbank is terrific because it naturally ranks it's marketplace products by category, popularity and something called Gravity – which simply measures popularity in terms of how many different affiliates are selling the product – a great way to gain insight into the channels available for your niche products.

Finding popular products on Clickbank with a decent gravity (I've found a gravity over 50 seems to do the trick, gives you a pretty good indication that 1) The product is in demand and sells and 2) That the sales letter is decent enough to convert at 1%+ (otherwise affiliates would not likely stay promoting it.

Next, you'll need to find a way to get low cost, highly relevant traffic to your affiliate site — this could be through PPC (though that will take a few weeks of testing to find the most profitable keywords), blogging, articles, and SEO for medium-term traffic generation.

You may find that one of these affiliate businesses brings you between $3-5K/month so you may have to either offer additional back-ends or build 3-4 of these niches to reach your goal.

Here are 3 very important concepts that I hope helps you understand how very important it is to create another source of income for yourself (more on how in just a minute)…

1. Work FOR Someone Else

Look, it's great to drive to work each morning, put in your 8-10 hours, drive home and get paid every two weeks working for someone else.  For most people, this model works very well UNTIL…

a) You have a disagreement with your boss and they turn your life into a living hell
b) You hate your day-to-day activities so much it's creating tremendous stress on you, your family and your health
c) You discover that the pressure, stress and travel associated with your job CANNOT continue…what do you do then?
d) Your company makes a few bad moves and suddenly YOU must pay for their mistakes
e) Despite your companies best efforts, the economy disappears and so does your job

Now what do you do? 

Believe me, the lack of control and absence of a plan that will at least tied you and your family over until another job comes along is an overwhelmingly stressful, sickening and totally un-empowering situation. 

It is precisely in the good times of your job that you need to plan and put into action a second income source because challenges will come – will you be ready?

2. Time For Money

So, the next step is that maybe you have a skill, knowledge or just the ability to work hard and you create a second income source by offering up your time and energy in exchange for extra cash.

It may be consulting, applying a trade (painting, building decks and fences on weekends, etc…), building someone else's business for them, getting involved in a franchise or other distribution network model where you get paid for the effort you put in.

Congratulations…you have moved one step closer to becoming financially free and have taken a giant step forward in controlling your income stream, BUT…

We know how precious time is in our life. 

The answer is not necessarily to create a second JOB where we get to enjoy less of life, have less free time, spend less time with our family and take a bigger hit to our health and energy because we're now working 14-hours a day to bring in both income streams.

What happens when you want to take an extended vacation…your second income stream ceases.

What happens if you get sick?  Your second income stream disappears right when you need it the MOST.

What happens if any untold number of interruptions takes place in your life that prevents you from putting 100% into your second income source?  That's right, it disappears.

What happens when you want to scale up your income and turn an extra $5,000/month into $10,000 or more?  When your second income stream trades time for money, it's very difficult to scale your business…and when you do, it means YOU must work harder.

3. LEVERAGED Income Activities

So, we're left with a third alternative…chaneling your skill, knowledge, expertise and energy into leveraged activities. 

What are some example of leveraged activities?

a) You take knowledge you already have, develop through research or pull from another expert and put it into an informational product which you sell for months and years to come.

For example, you pull together an ebook, report or book on the best Yoga techniques for new mothers through a combination of writing about your own experience and pulling information from both yoga instructors and other yoga participants.  It takes you 6-weeks (See the 6-Week InfoProduct Profits Course Inside of InfoMarketer'sZone) of effort then you can continue to genearte a second income source from that proudct for years to come with NO additional effort. 

Now that is leverage.

You enhance that by showing a video of an actual mortgage negotiation or a set of templates that you can use to communicate with your bank or lending institution. 

c) You are a die-hard sports coach – perhaps soccer.  You've decided that the hundreds of thousands of other volunteer and paid soccer instructors around the world would find it useful to get monthly updates on soccer world information, training opportunties, new skills training, team building skills, and so on…so you develop a membership site for soccer training and charge $17/month. 

Before long you have 500 subscribers paying you $8500 each MONTH for your information.  All of the content from previous months adds to the attraction of the site – that is all LEVERAGED content that will continue to grow your income over time. 

The GREAT news for you is that you have created an automatic money machine that continues to pay you leveraged income based on your past effort while you continue to add more leveraged business income to your bottom line. 

This model is scalable, will double and triple your return without you having to work any harder, can quickly replace your existing income from your job or "time for money" business income and builds a tremendously valuable business entity that you can use to retire wealthy in a very short period of time.

It's CRITICAL that you begin developing your own second and third source of income – both for your financial, emotional and physical well being.

Easy is in the eye of the beholder. 

For some people, blogging 4-times a day and turning that into a business is easy because they like (and are good at) coming up with entertaining and informative blog postings.  For someone else, this could seem like shoving bamboo shutes up their finger nails – it's highly dependent on your interests and strengths.

Another example, a good many people are excellent at pulling a desire for information out of their marketplace and quickly turning those into "teaching" or info products, a business we help many succeeed with each month through our Ultimate Information Entrepreneur's Success Package - but for others, the exercise of pulling demand and packaging information is just too painful and too hard.

For me, the easiest thing in the world (breathing and walking aside) is to find questions to answer and package that as info products – so that's a busines I find very simple.  Many people make their internet business too complicated by sweating the idea of creating their own products to sell online. 

The truth is that the simplest products that respond directly to what your market wants are the best sellers…this is one business where trying too hard often results in LESS success.

If I had to sell door-to-door, finish basements or even build 100 websites to earn money- that to me would be hard and I would likely not have the slightest chance of succeeding. 

The good thing about building a business and marketing it online is that there are different business models that you can match with your own strengths – so take some time and document the different business models that you see online (info products, affiliate marketing, advertising, software development, etc…), then list the keys to succeeding with each business model, match them up to your own strengths and interests and Wham! you have a business that is still challenging, but seems easy because you are efficient and enjoy what you do.
