Every once in a long while I write a blog post that is equally informative AND allows me to vent a little, typically the result of repetitive build-up of frustration.

Today is one of those days…and it comes directly from dozens upon dozens of cases in the last couple of months where aspiring entrepreneurs confuse the difference between a solid business and internet marketing.

Specifically, the error is in believing that internet marketing (or any kind of marketing) IS the business…not exactly!

What Is Your Business Value To The Market?

Today, the message is clear…makes you have a business BEFORE you put your energy, attention and money into marketing.

For many people getting started with their on-line business they begin chasing the dollars believing that there is magic in marketing when in fact the magic is really in the combination between a solid business value proposition and the marketing.

What tends to happen when we get people over to InfoMarketer’sZone looking for help building their on-line business is that they are 100% focused on aspects of marketing…

  • How to launch a blog
  • Getting more traffic to their site
  • Setting up a sales funnel
  • Advertising on Google or Facebook
  • Which webhost they should use
  • etc…

The challenge for most is that none of this matters if they lack a strong business offering to an identifiable market and have set objectives for their business.

Jumping into a market (let’s say Stop Smoking) by trying to resell an ebook from Clickbank when you have virtually no passion or interest in further expanding in that market is NOT a business.

Yet, that’s exactly what many people are doing.

They are grabbing a product based on the belief that they think will sell, for which they have no particular affinity, belief or commitment to and then jump deep into marketing wondering why their efforts are not working.

Contrast that to an entrepreneur that has a driving ambition to bring his passion for helping people solve the most urgent health and fitness challenges, knowing that he will commit to this market for the next 5-years and continually grow his or her influence, reach and profit through adding continual value to that marketplace.

Big difference…and one that we all need to understand if we are to be effective building any kind of business off-line or on-line.

Those who were lucky enough to work with us within InfoMarketer’sZone know the difference instantly…the very first week of the Information Product Profits Fast-Track Program is focused entirely on helping them discover or refine their business idea and value in their market.

So, before you dig deep into marketing, take some time to do a “gut-check” around your business idea, product, your business and what value you bring to the market.

Once you have a business idea and plan that gives you equal parts “fire in the belly” and “fear like you are being chased by a grizzly bear” – then you have reached the point where marketing becomes relevant again.

Until that point, don’t fall for the schemes and part-time opportunities where marketing is THE business when we all know that is not the case.
