One of the most perplexing (and potentially overwhelming tasks) standing between on-line marketers and building successful lists of subscribers as well as building highly profitable sales funnels is creating a successful lead magnet.

For those of you not familiar with the term lead magnet, it is actually quite simple.

A lead magnet is simply a high-value, no-cost (or at least very low-cost) gift you provide to your leads in exchange for beginning a “warmer” relationship with them.

For those of you who have taken the 6-week Fast Tracking InfoProfit Marketing Program inside InfoMarketer’sZone you will know all about sales funnels and lead magnets and how important they are to building a highly successful on-line business.

This the first mistake many on-line marketers make, they look at a lead magnet as simply the “carrot” that gets people on to their list at any cost.  What I mean is that they will use any product (a compilation of 3rd party content, a list of resources, a Private Label Rights product of questionable value or a product that is not directly linked to the offer they will put in front of their lead once they have subscribed) – their only goal is to get people to subscribe when the REAL goal should be to get a lead that will convert into a customer as part of their sales funnel.

The reality is that your lead magnet is step 1 of an important process called your sales funnel that is designed to take cold traffic and turn them into loyal, long-term customers for your business.

So, how do you do it right?

3 Tips To Create Successful Lead Magnets That Will Increase Your Leads AND Your Profits

You do have to keep two very important things in mind when your lead magnet is part of your overall sales funnel (Objective isn’t just to get the person on your list, but to eventually convert them into a customer for one or more of your products)

Alignment With Your Offer

Your lead magnet must align closely with your ultimate offering. This is one of the biggest mistakes online marketers make (and it took me a long while to figure this out myself) – top offers have a closely aligned lead magnet that naturally flows into the upsell of your product or service. This ensures maximum conversion on your offer. It simply does not work to have a general lead magnet that gets someone onto your list and then an offer that does not align well with the lead magnet – your conversion will not be much higher than simply sending cold traffic to your site.

Branding Yourself With Your Lead Magnet

Ideally you want to brand yourself with your lead magnet. Your lead magnet is the first experience a new lead will have in getting a product from you…do you really want that to be a collection of articles from other people? A better approach is to pull some ideas into your own product, provide some personal experience or a story and then lead into your offer…much more effective.  Some possibilities include your own report, a series of training videos, a webinar or an interview that you provide access to subscribers as your lead magnet.

Have Multiple Lead Magnets

What most on-line marketers discover is that they have leads coming in from ads, SEO or partner traffic that may fall into more than one category.   For example, if you run an offer related to losing weight you may have leads coming in that are looking for diet information, others looking to understand effective exercise techniques and still others wondering about the proper use of nutritional supplements.  What you can (and should) do is create 3 separate lead magnets that cater to each of these interests and then split your list into 3 sub-niches to which you can then market your own as well as partner products that much more closely align with their interests.   This technique alone can easily improve your profits by a factor of at least 3X.

Creating a highly profitable sales funnel does not happen by chance and your choice of a lead magnet, the front end of that sales funnel, is critical to the success of your campaign.

Do you have a lead magnet, and if so, does it follow the 3 guidelines we have given above for making it more profitable?
