This week’s post is especially close to my heart (and head), as writing my first back over 20-years was LIFE-CHANGING for me and my family.

Up until releasing my first eBook (which sold for $47), I was working Corporate and Freelance jobs helping companies develop products and training programs…while some of these gigs were fun, most were extremely frustrating and ended up making others far more money than I ever received.

So what is an eBook?

In this post, I’m speaking about non-fiction digital products (often created in MS Word, OpenOffice or sometimes even in NotePad on your phone or tablet).

Usually, the final version is converted to PDF for platform-independent consumption.

These can range from 20-page short eBooks or reports to 200-page manuals or long-form eBooks. As we’ll see in a moment, the length and format of your eBook matters far less than it’s purpose and target.

eBooks provide very fast and simple ways for your market to get and consume your content instantly, without having to wait for shipping or delivery.

Finally, eBooks are often just the START…we usually end up converting our successful eBooks into print books (for those that like to have print copies in their hands), bundles where we package multiple eBooks in a package and convert them into presentations for either live or online course delivery.

As you can see, your eBook can be a significant source of income on its own…but can also be the catalyst to MUCH bigger online digital product businesses.

Why Would Anyone Listen To Me?

The first question that comes to most people’s minds when they have the desire to write their first (or next) eBook is…”Will anyone want to read what I write?”

Think of an urgent problem you are trying to solve.

It could be health related or making a major financial decision. Or, you could be frustrated trying to find new, meaningful relationships. You could be struggling with a problematic person in your life or suffer from lack of confidence or loneliness.

Keep two things in mind….

  1. When you reach rock-bottom and just want a SOLUTION to your situation, you will pay (and pay quite a lot) to get quick, proven and succinct answers. Rather than taking days to research, you will pay to FIND the solution if it is presented to you in the right way
  2. When it comes to major and urgent questions around frustrations, condition and life transformations, this isn’t one single person…not even a few thousand…but Millions of people. Solve the challenge for 1-5 people and you’ll have an ARMY of eager customers looking for your eBook

Is Writing My Own eBook Possible? Practical?

I get this question often from people who think of the traditional publishing route where it takes a LOT of work and luck to find a publisher, months more work to come up with a manuscript and even then…if a deal is worked out, only get to keep 10% or less of the finished book profit.

Traditionally published books have their place, but there is FAR greater speed and opportunity in self-publishing and selling your own eBooks where you get to keep 60-95% of the profit (60% if you want to sell through partners and give them a percentage to expose your eBook to their giant audiences, 95% if you sell direct through email, social platforms, online platforms, etc…)

Do This BEFORE You Start

Writing an eBook is both far easier than most people anticipate, but also trickier given that most people go about it all wrong.

That’s why we put together the comprehensive 30-Day Product Profit System – specifically to walk you through the steps that make writing your eBook or creating your digital product much easier, a lot clearer and ensuring it turns out both highly appealing to you audience as well as gets raving reviews so many others will want it too.

It starts with making sure you know the ultimate purpose and how that matches with the URGENT desire in your marketplace.

Writing an eBook is not about “information” or “writing what you think people need to know” as much as it is about “answering questions that help people through major life transformations” and “writing to help them move from where they are today, to where they want to be tomorrow.”

Not only is this EASY to identify online, but the power it has on focusing your project AND the ultimate impact on your sales and income from writing your eBook is nothing short of ASTOUNDING!

Thanks to a paid mentor I had over 20-years ago I learned this first-hand by transforming what I wanted to write into a much simpler, clearer version of what my market wanted to see and know. This took 2-weeks of editing and re-writing but made ALL the difference in why my first eBook did 5-figures in the first few weeks of release.

5 Steps To Writing Your Ebook To Sell

So, let’s give you the framework that gives you the best chance at quickly finishing your eBook and turning it into a top selling product for you online.

Step 1: Choose Your In-Demand Topic

There are eBooks and online courses about nearly every topic imaginable.

Some examples:

? A virtual assistant agency helping people get the most out of their VA

? Artists who teach people how and where to show and sell their paintings

? A therapist who teaches people about a certain specific disorder

? A yarn spinner teaching knitting tips, tricks & hacks

? A recovered addict who uses online programs to support others who are going through tough times

? A food company using launches educate their audience and bulk sell seasonal food

? A skin care professional who educates people on how to live a vibrant, glowing life

? A music teacher who went online and never looked back

? A leadership consultant who educates managers & CEO’s how to be a better leader

? A human resource expert who teaches small business owners how to manage staff better

? A soft skills expert who has an automated course that sells on autopilot

? A life coach, health coach, relationship coach, and a collection of other coaches who have grown their businesses by launching new online products

As you can see, there are so many topics where people want to be something more than what they are today and will pay others to help them get there.

Roughly speaking, many of these products fall into one of these 7 categories:

  • Business or Leadership
  • Relationships
  • Insights/Thinking
  • Personal finance
  • Travel, entertainment or hobbies
  • Health and wellness
  • Personal development

What we teach clients, at least to start with, is pick an area where you have some passion or interest as well as ideally some experience. You certainly don’t need to be an expert, just a starting point that can help advance your learning and thinking faster.

Step 2: Clarify The Ultimate Purpose

By far the most critical success factor for your eBook project will be how well you put your finger on the ultimate purpose.

Think outcomes.

What is it that your ideal customer will achieve by applying your eBook to their life?

Not only what change and outcome will they achieve…but how will they feel about it and how will it change their life?

There is ALL the difference in the world between an eBook that writes generally about weight loss versus one that writes a specific 30-day plan for someone to lose 10-lbs and 1-inch of their waist (just one example outcome.)

Inside 30-Day Product Profit System we spend the first week and first module of video instruction showing exactly how you operate within your targeted market and topic to pinpoint the GOLDEN purpose…the desired outcome that will cause huge demand for your completed eBook.

Of course, huge demand equals large sales and profit!

Step 3: Outline Secrets: Fast And Highly Effective Ebook Techniques

The reason I put writing my first eBook off for so long is that I dreaded the weeks and weeks of writing.

Frankly, I didn’t even know how to go about it and that led to tons of uncertainty and many false starts.

All of that changed overnight when I learned about proper outlining.

In a nutshell, you work back from your ultimate purpose of the eBook.

You develop the 5-8 steps required to achieve the ultimate transformational outcome. These are the major stepping-stones to take your reader from where they are NOW to where they want to be TOMORROW.

These become your main Chapters.

Next, you break each Chapter into a series of 5-10 questions that need to be answered for your reader to achieve that stepping-stone.

If this sounds simple, that’s because it REALLY is.

I completed my first 97-page eBook in just 3-days using this system. It really works.

We show you exactly how inside 30 Day Product Profit System if you want to unlock your “Special Powers” for writing eBooks and creating products from this point forward.

If you learn nothing more than this and take action, your life will be changed forever!

Step 4: Minimum Viable Version…Grow Your Sales

Any tech or software developers out there will understand the term “Minimum Viable Product” to mean the most basic version of your product that will address 80% of your customer’s desire and need.

The idea here is get the best product you can out the quickest so you can get it into some initial customers’ hands, make some initial money (which will further motivate you) and quickly enhance the product based on the feedback of your customers.

Your MVP eBook can provide for you over a number of months while you put some money in the bank and perhaps add a chapter or two to help you shore up the product and make it even better.

The other objective here is to get some early champions that will both endorse your product (which has a very large impact on future sales) as well as potentially recommend the product to their contacts leading to more referral sales.

The MVP approach also prevents you from keeping your eBook off the market due to perfectionist syndrome!

When you know this is a first version which will be followed by 2cnd and 3rd editions that will be even better, it helps overcome the psychological hurdle of pushing the button on releasing your eBook.

Step 5: Scale And Grow Your Sales

I’m a big fan of building an audience way back during Steps 2-4 so that you have an initial pool of targeted customers right off the bat.

How do you find and reach your audience?

Two primary ways – content (social, articles, podcasts, videos, etc…) and paid ads (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, TikTok, etc….)

If you have the money, paid ads can work more quickly, but comes with its own steep learning curve.

I prefer to start with daily content posting. My strategy is:

  • 5-10 daily Twitter posts (you can follow and watch me in progress over here at Twitter)
  • Facebook post based on best performing Twitter post
  • 3-4 videos or Lives each week best on the best performing FB posts
  • Replicate to Instagram as Reels (they have the best reach right now)

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram at the HigherTrust username…it’s always best to watch WHAT we are doing 🙂

Over time, drive traffic back to landing pages with some giveaways to gain subscribers and get into the habit of emailing them a few times a week.

There are THREE major pillars you want to use to grow your sales and profit:

  1. Grow your audience and make more and better offers to them
  2. Grow your product portfolio – add coaching, online courses, webinars and additional eBooks or workbooks to get your average price up.
  3. Begin to grow your team so that you can expand sales, customer support and your product creation – more on that in a later post

Finishing Thoughts – Do These Things Next…

When you release your first eBook to the market:

  1. The feeling of euphoria, excitement and confidence is overwhelming – believe me!
  2. You will realize that you now have a lifelong skill that can generate cash for you anytime you need it – financial security will be a worry in the past
  3. it’s addictive! You’ll want to get working on your next one right away
  4. It gets easier each time you do it.
  5. The possibilities and attention are endless…keep the momentum going by pushing your message and continuing to develop high-value customer products
